Live the Question

정답을 맞추는 능력보다, 질문을 잘 던지는 감각이 중요해진 시대다. 단답형 지식은 이미 AI의 데이터베이스에 저장되어 있고, 질문의 방식에 따라 우리가 도출할 수 있는 의미의 깊이는 무한히 확장될 수 있다. 이러한 시대에, 질문을 품고 살아가는 태도는 인간이 할 수 있는 가장 창조적이고 본질적인 행위라 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다. 

 

끊임없이 의문을 품는 것은 곧 ‘더 일마(theilma)’의 역사이기도 하다. 라이너 마리아 릴케는 『젊은 시인에게 보내는 편지』에서 “질문을 살아가라”는 조언을 남겼다. 정답을 성급히 구하는 대신, 질문과 함께 머물며 그 안에서 삶을 고찰하고 성찰하라는 이 문장은 더일마가 추구하는 태도와 깊이 닿아 있다. 2017년 시작된 더일마는 더 큰 매출이나 트렌드가 아닌, 미래의 도약을 위한 지속 가능한 가치를 담겠다는 결심에서 비롯되었다. 이후 7년 동안 이어진 성장은 단순한 외형적 확장이 아닌, 끊임없는 질문을 통해 브랜드의 본질을 탐구해 온 결과이기도 하다.

그리고 이제, 2025년 서촌에 문을 연 첫 번째 플래그십 스토어는 더일마가 던져온 질문에 대한 하나의 응답이며, 동시에 다음 질문을 향한 출발점이다. 오래된 골목과 시간이 머무는 공간 위에 자리한 이 매장은, 다양한 질문을 통해 더일마와 이 공간을 향유하는 모든 이들이 각자의 호기심과 사유를 확장해 나갈 수 있는 열린 장이 되기를 바라는 마음에서 시작되었다. 브랜드가 품어온 질문은 물론, 이곳을 찾는 이들의 삶 속에서도 또 다른 질문들이 피어나기를 기대한다. 

 

‘일마’는 핀란드어로 ‘공기’ 혹은 ‘분위기’를 뜻한다. 더일마가 서촌이라는 장소를 선택한 이유 또한, 느림의 미학이 살아 있는 오래된 골목과 집들이 브랜드가 지향하는 세계관을 고스란히 품고 있기 때문이다. 특히, 110년 된 한옥과 60년 된 양옥이 마당을 중심으로 서로 마주 보도록 재구성된 조병수 건축가의 리노베이션 공간 ‘막집’은 다양한 소재를 엮어내는 더일마의 디자인 철학과도 자연스럽게 맞닿아 있다. 이 공간은 유행을 따르기 보다 오래도록 사랑받을 수 있는, 더일마가 지향하는 타임리스한 가치의 물리적 구현이기도 하다. 여기에 뉴욕과 파리를 오가는 디자이너 해리 누리에브(Harry Nuriev)의 크로스비 스튜디오(Crosby Studio)가 실내 인테리어로 참여하여, 예술가와 창작자가 모여 영감을 주고받으며 의미 있는 교류를 할 수 있는 분위기를 마련했다. 공간의 동선, 조명, 소품 하나하나에 세심한 미감을 더했고, 내부의 티룸을 통해 차 한 잔의 여유를 즐길 수 있는 머묾이 더해졌다. 과거 문인과 예술가가 모여 살며 교류를 나누던 마을의 기억은 이제 더일마의 공기 속에서 새로운 창조의 무대로 거듭나고 있다.

바로 이 무대에서 소개해드릴 세 작가는 각기 다른 방향에서 질문을 던지는 이들이다. 회화, 조각, 그리고 공예에 이르기까지 다양한 작품들은 더 일마의 공간 곳곳에서 새로운 질문을 더하는 영감의 실마리가 될 것이다.

이소윤 작가의 화두는 ‘소통’이다. 나와 타자, 나와 우주, 나아가 나와 나 자신 사이의 소통은 언제나 이해와 오해의 스펙트럼 사이에 머물고 있을 것이다. 작가가 주로 소재로 활용하는 ‘꽃’은 불교적 의미의 ‘화엄’으로부터 영감을 얻은 것이다. 각기 다른 꽃들이 우열도 갈등도 없이 고유한 존재로 조화를 이룬 모습은 작가가 꿈꾸는 소통의 이상향에 닿아 있는 모습일 것이다. 그것은 완벽한 상호이해가 아니라 오해를 그저 오해로 두고, 오해가 다시 새로운 소통을 만들어내는 세계다. 화려한 색과 강렬한 향기 속에 담긴 자연의 생명력은 삶의 본질에 대한 시각적 비유이기도 하다.

정정주 작가의 화두는 ‘빛’이다. 빛은 무엇이며, 어디에서 왔는가? 빛은 상상할 수 없을 만큼 먼 근원으로부터 와서 이내 사라지며, 대상을 잠시 스칠 뿐이지만 비로소 그 대상을 세상에 드러나게 하는 매개자다. 한편, 빛도 스스로는 제 모습을 드러내지 못한다. 대상을 통해서만 그 존재를 입증할 수 있다는 점에서 빛과 사물은 상호 의존적이다. 빛과 사물의 만남은 시간의 흐름 속에서 계속 변화하니, 자연히 세계에 대한 우리의 인식은 순간적이고, 주관적이며, 파편적일 수밖에 없을 것이다. 특히 경험은 장소와 밀접한 관계가 있기에 작품 속에서 공간과 건축은 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 이번 전시에서는 한옥과 양옥, 그리고 빛의 흐름을 볼 수 있는 넓은 마당과 열린 하늘 아래 작품이 놓임으로써, 빛의 흐름에 따라 작품 또한 시시각각 새롭게 모습을 드러낼 것이다. 우리의 일상이 객관적 진실이 아니라 결국 주관적 경험의 총체라는 것을 깨닫게 될 때, 비로서 이 세계에 대한 의심과 질문을 던지는 태도로 이어질 것이다. 

 

조민지 작가의 화두는 ‘자연’이다. 바람에 흔들리는 나뭇가지, 움트는 자연, 비가 오는 날의 흙 냄새, 푸른 바다의 색, 빗방울과 이슬, 이 모든 미세한 감각들이 작품의 영감이 된다. 이토록 섬세하고 다채로운 자연을 담아내기 위해 모든 재료와 기술이 총동원된다. 작가의 본 전공인 금속은 물론, 나무, 레진, 플라스틱, 자개, 레진, 유리 그리고 실제 자연물인 흙과 나뭇잎에 이르기까지, 정성을 다한 조각 하나 하나가 모여 덩어리가 된다. 작품의 매력은 공중에 떠올라 바람 속에서 흔들리고, 그림자를 일렁일 때 배가된다. 바로 ‘공기(ilma)’ 속에서 ‘분위기(ilma)’를 만들어내는 것이다. 작품 앞에서 잠시 숨을 고르며 지금 이 순간 느끼고 있는 감각이 무엇인지를 질문하는 순간, 그것이야말로 이번 전시가 관객에게 드리고 싶은 가장 큰 선물일 것이다. 

 

과거와 미래, 한옥과 양옥, 동양과 서양, 헌 옷과 새 옷, 그리고 패션•건축•아트가 한 자리에 모인 이번 전시 Live the Question은 바로 지금 우리가 살고 있는 시대의 반영이다. 이질적인 것들이 함께 있음으로써 서로를 보완하고 자극하며 새로운 의미를 만들어내는 자리, 그 속에서 우리는 끊임없이 열린 질문을 던질 수 있을 것이다.

In our era, the ability to ask profound questions has become more valuable than the ability to find the right answers. Short-form knowledge is already embedded in the vast databases of artificial intelligence, and the depth of meaning we can derive now depends largely on how we frame our inquiries. In such a time, living with questions is perhaps one of the most creative and essential acts a human being can undertake.

 

The act of continuously asking questions is, in itself, the very history of theilma. In Letters to a Young Poet, Rainer Maria Rilke offered the enduring counsel to “live the questions.” Rather than hastily seeking definitive answers, he urged us to remain within the questions—to contemplate and reflect on life from within them. This sentiment resonates deeply with the philosophy of theilma.

Established in 2017, theilma was born not out of a pursuit for higher profits or fleeting trends, but from a commitment to sustainable values that would empower future transformation. The growth achieved over the past seven years is not a mere expansion of form or scale, but the outcome of a relentless inquiry into the brand’s very essence.

​

And now, the opening of theilma’s first flagship store in Seochon in 2025 marks both a response to the questions the brand has long contemplated and a point of departure toward new ones. Situated in an old alley where time seems to linger, this store was conceived as an open space—one where The ilma and all who engage with it can expand their own curiosities and reflections through diverse questions. It is our hope that not only the inquiries the brand has carried thus far, but also the lives of those who step into this space, may give rise to new and meaningful questions.

The word ilma, meaning "air" or "atmosphere" in Finnish, aptly captures both the spatial ambiance of Seochon and the brand’s conceptual orientation. The venue is the result of a sensitive architectural renovation by Cho Byoung-soo, who has harmonized a 110-year-old Korean hanok with a 60-year-old Western-style house across a shared courtyard. The structure becomes a site of temporal and stylistic dialogue. Interior design by Crosby Studios’ Harry Nuriev—who navigates the creative terrains of New York and Paris—imbues the space with a contemporary sensibility that invites both contemplation and resonance. This is not merely a store but a cultivated environment where thought, aesthetic experience, and lived atmosphere coalesce.

 

It is within this context that Live the Question introduces the practices of three contemporary artists—LEE Soyoon, JEONG Jeongju, and JO Minji—each of whom approaches art-making as a means of posing fundamental inquiries. Their works, dispersed throughout the space, do not offer didactic interpretations but rather open-ended encounters that gesture toward the unknown.

 

LEE Soyoon explores themes of communication and coexistence through the lens of floral symbolism, inspired by the Buddhist cosmology of interconnectedness (Hwa-eom). Her vibrant compositions suggest that meaning is not fixed but constantly negotiated across thresholds of self and other, subject and cosmos.

 

JEONG Jeongjoo is preoccupied with the phenomenon of light—its ephemerality, its revealing nature, and its dependence on material form. Installed in a hanok exposed to natural illumination, her works embrace the temporal variability of light as a metaphor for subjective perception.

 

JO Minji engages with the tactile and poetic dimensions of nature. Her sculptures—delicately crafted from metal, wood, resin, and organic matter—hover and shimmer, animated by air currents and refracted light. They evoke the atmospheric dimension of ilma, inviting viewers into a sensory dialogue with the present moment.

 

In weaving together the architectural, historical, and material resonances of its site, this exhibition becomes a meditation on hybridity—of culture, time, and form. It reflects the condition of our age: a space between certainties, charged with potential. Here, to “live the question” is to remain receptive, to linger in ambiguity, and to allow meaning to emerge not from resolution, but from sustained attention.
